WHAT TO TAKE - PERMIT, TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS (CARDWELL 1:1000,000 and HILLCOCK POINT 1: 50,000) Take GPS, EPIRB, Satellite phone, Secateurs, Thermals, Rain Coats, ALL your food and Clothes! First Aid kit! HIGH BUSH SKILLS NEEDED!
HOW TO GET THERE- Follow the Fresh water creek at Ramsey Bay all the way up to the saddle! When you see a big Y in the creek (stone stack, ROUGHLY 4 HOURS up from Ramsey Bay you will see this) take the 'right' CREEK heading up to the saddle! (The left creek takes you up to the thumb) Allow 7 to 8 hours from Ramsey Bay to "The Saddle" on "Mt Bowen"! The Big Rock Bolders you have to climb over to get up the creek can be VERY slippery, we chose to walk in the water rather then slipping off the rocks and breaking a hip, but we did destroy our hiking shoes.
Getting to The Summit - The THICK SCRUB was insane and without a day to chop your way up there with a pair of Secateurs- we did not book enough nights on the island. I would Recommend going to the summit after a National Parks do a Control burn up there. The THICK SCRUB AND ROCKS on Top was insane for Camping! (nearly need a whipper snipper to make a spot to camp)
BE PREPARED FOR THE CREEK TO FLOOD!
The weather forecast said 'low chance of a light shower'.... this was not the case, the creek flooded over night and we could not use the creek bed to get back to Ramsey Bay. We used our GPS and Secateurs to cut our way back through thick, dense, spikey, razor sharp Rain Forrest, we were cut and bruised from head to toe! But we got back to Ramsey Bay safely and alive.. DO NOT TAKE THE CREEK ON WHEN FLOODING! Your Choices are - Sit it out and camp and wait for water to drop down to a safe level Or take on the Rain Forrest like we did. DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU HAVE SOMEONE BRILLIANT ON A GPS. VERY EASY TO GET LOST IN THE RAIN FORREST (AS YOU CANNOT SEE THE SUN AND YOU HAVE NO IDEA OF WHICH DIRECTION YOU ARE GOING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You will end up on the news! How embarrassing!
WATER UP ON THE SADDLE -
We did this in 1st June 2016 and there was water 30 mt back down from the saddle. (Depending on when you do this and when the rain has last fallen will depend on where the fresh water starts and stops.
6 nights and 7 days (OR MORE) are Needed on the Island to achieve the summit!!
The rest of the Thorsbourne Trail was lovely but we needed two more nights on the island to enjoy and slow it down for a bit more R and R! We did it in 4 nights and five days... but i would recommend min, 6 nights and 7 days to achieve The saddle and the summit on MT Bowen!
night 1 -Little Ramsey Bay
nights 2 and 3 on "The Saddle" (Check Water situation)
Night 4 Little Ramsey Bay
Night 5 Zoe Falls
Night 6 Mulligan Falls
